Physiological and Metabolic Changes in ‘Xinyu Mandarin’ Following Natural Tetraploidization

The mandarin is an important fruit crop worldwide, and ‘Xinyu mandarin’—a local Citrus reticulata variety—is widely cultivated in Jiangxi Province, China. Autopolyploidy has frequently been used for the improvement of varieties. In a previous study, we identified tetraploid (4X) material mandarin’ generated from its diploid (2X) mother seedling via spontaneous mutation. However, physiological metabolic variations after polyploidy are not clear enough, which conducive to early screening. present analyzed morphological, physiological, differences between plants. tetraploids had larger thicker leaves, activities key enzymes photosynthesis, total chlorophyll, phenolic, proline contents, were all higher tetraploids. non-targeted metabolomic profile, 522 metabolites identified, 61 significantly different diploids differential included similar proportions primary secondary metabolites, most these up-regulated tetraploids, especially stress-related such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, alkaloids, so on, indicating that may possess better stress tolerance ability vigor.
